Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is involved in many processes in the body. It synthesizes red blood cells, RNA and DNA. The vitamin supports the absorption of folic acid into the cell interior. In addition, cobalamin is involved in the formation of nerve fiber sheaths.
Since the liver can only store as much vitamin B12 as is needed for three years, a deficiency occurs if the person concerned has not taken in cobalamin through their daily diet for several years. People who are vegetarian or vegan have an even higher risk of developing a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Gastrointestinal diseases with disturbed food intake, malnutrition and pregnancy also promote the occurrence of deficiency symptoms. They appear in the form of
- Anemia (red blood cell maturation disorders)
- injured mucous membranes
- Tingling in feet and hands
- neurological disorders (funicular spinal disease)
- difficulty concentrating
