Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is water soluble and belongs to the group of B vitamins.
The human body cannot produce the vitamin itself, which is why it has to be supplied through food. Cobalamin is found in animal products such as meat, eggs and milk. Vitamin B12 is of great importance for the following processes in the body:
- formation of red blood cells
- growth
- cell division
- nervous system
- homocysteine metabolism
Why is there a B12 deficiency?
If enough cobalamin is ingested through the diet, a deficiency can still occur. The vitamin is very sensitive and can be destroyed by cooking and storage.
B12 deficiency also develops over time in people who largely avoid animal foods.
Another risk factor for deficiency is the type of intake. So that B12 can get into the blood via the intestine, the so-called “intrinsic factor” is necessary. This is a special protein that is often no longer produced in sufficient quantities in older people, for example. Consume the contents of a drinking bottle daily. Shake well before consumption.
